I recall that setting in previous versions but the closest thing to that setting is "Remember Each Folder's View Settings" which doesn't solve the problem regardless if it is checked or not. I think it may be a rouge Registry setting. Don't forget, it also effects my task bar not just Windows Explorer!

A better replacement for Windows Explorer ?
After loading both packages the Windows Explorer display has changed - it used to be same as my 98SE display but now I can't get it to show the file tree in a two-pane layout. It shows folders in a right-hand pane and only offers IE style left-hand pane with options such as "search", "favorites", etc.

My suggestion is to invest some time in exploring the many viewing options for Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, the option settings are scattered in the UI. There is a Menu Bar, but it is turned off by default; you can toggle it on momentarily by pressing <Alt>, or (semi-)permanently by clicking Organize | Layout.
